The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) Summer Institute brings together trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) with researchers and community partners to build research capacity and excellence in sex and gender+ health research. The theme for the 2026 Summer Institute is Benchside Breakthroughs to Community Champions Innovation & Implementation of Sex and Gender+ Science.

Hosted by Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the CIHR IGH 2026 Summer Institute will bring together emerging researchers, experts, Indigenous leadership and community partners to build capacity in Sex and Gender+ Science.

This 5-day, interdisciplinary training program will explore the impact of sex, gender and intersectional variables across the four pillars of health research—biomedical, clinical, health services, and population health.

Participants will attend expert talks from diverse speakers, interactive workshops, and trainee-led sessions, and will have the opportunity to learn from, and network with, leaders in sex and gender+ science. Daily programs will be organized around the themes of:

  • Confronting Bias and Building Solutions in Preclinical Research
  • Transforming Women's Health: Bridging Clinical Research and Education
  • Innovating Health Services: Gender-Inclusive Care, Ethics, and Rural Accessibility
  • Equity in Action: Social and Population Health Research for Communities

All trainees who wish to attend the 2026 IGH Summer Institute, must apply through for a IGH Summer Institute Travel Award application.
